Press Release - Mayoral Reception Celebrating 25 years of local authority support for the arts

On May 25th, 2010 Cllr. Tony Mulcahy, Mayor of Clare held a Mayoral Reception celebrating 25 years of local authority support for the arts in Clare.

Welcoming the attendees the Mayor explained that the reception was to mark the 25th anniversary since Clare County Council became the first local authority in the country to appoint a County Arts Officer. Today, all counties have at least one arts officer, a position that is seen as key to cultural development.

He explained that working in tandem with the Arts Council of Ireland, Clare County Council has invested heavily in the arts in the county and boasts a wonderful array of talent.

‘Whilst we are internationally renowned for our music, Clare is also very proud of its visual artists, writers, dancers, film makers, craft workers etc. Today we gather to celebrate the individual artists, the festivals, arts organisations and venues that make the arts in Clare so vibrant.’ Cllr. Tony Mulcahy, Mayor of Clare.

The Mayor pointed out that the contribution made by artists to our communities, economy and society at large is invaluable and immeasurable.

Over the last 25 years Clare County Council has been responsible for such initiatives as Glor and the Tulla Stables Studios as well as programmes that go to the heart of our community such as the Artist in Schools Scheme, Arts & People with Disabilities Scheme, the Bealtaine Festival, the Riches of Clare series to name a few.

In conclusion the Mayor noted that the appointment of the first Arts Officer, 25 years ago, was in difficult times and once again we are facing challenges in the arts. If, however, the strength, courage and creativity of the arts community is as strong for the next 25 years as it has been for the last, we look forward in confidence to further developing the arts in the county.
