Irish Decimal Coins
Presented to Minister for External Affairs, Dr Patrick Hillery, by the Central Bank, in 1971, upon the introduction of decimalisation.
Dr Hillery served as Minister for External Affairs from 1969-1972. During that time he negotiated Irelands entry into the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1973.
The other issue that dominated his period in this Ministry was the outbreak of the troubles in Northern Ireland. In 1970, at the request of the Taoiseach Jack Lynch, he paid a secret visit to the Falls Road, Belfast to assess the situation nationalists living there were facing.
