Loyal National Repeal Association Card This Repeal Movement Association Card was issued to David Bourke in 1842. It was found among the possessions of the late Agnes Bourke, Kilkee, who died in the early 1960’s and was taken to the US by a relative. The Repeal Movement was instigated by Daniel O’Connell following the success of Catholic Emancipation in 1829. The aim of the association was to repeal the union between Britain and Ireland and establish an Irish Parliament. However it wasn’t until the introduction of ‘Monster Meetings’ that the Association reached its zenith comprising some 40,000 members in the early 1840’s. Ref: 2003.36 |
