Postcard: “The Road to the Lake”

This colour postcard entitled “The Road to the Lake” was produced by Valentine & Sons of Dundee and London. James Valentine established his photography company in 1851 and was one of the earliest pioneers of the postcard industry which first flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Published as part of Valentine’s “Carbo-Colour” series the postcard probably dates to the 1930s and shows a rather romantic view of Ireland complete with mountains, lake, thatched cottage and donkey and cart. The cottage in the scene was located beside Lakeview National School, Aghamore Near, Co. Sligo with Lough Gill in the background. The following link,570672,832417,7,9 shows the cottage marked with a red cross. [Thanks to Michael Slevin for the location information].
A verse by Eva Brennan printed on the bottom left corner reads: “Irish Lakes so still and blue, Irish skies of changeful hue, Ever I’ll remember you, Near or far away.”
