Biddy Early Lecture In Tuamgraney

Clare Champion, Friday, March 26, 2004

East Clare Heritage will host a lecture revealing the true story of Biddy Early next Thursday, April 1 in Tuamgraney. The lecture by author and historian Meda Ryan will give an interesting and informative account of the life of one of Clare’s best-known names. Drawing from her publication Biddy Early - The Wise Woman of Clare, Meda will talk about Biddy’s childhood in Feakle, the society in which she grew up and her contribution to that society. The lecture will also discuss Biddy’s travels around Clare, her four marriages and how she earned a worldwide reputation.

An oil stock is reputed to have been used to anoint Biddy Early on her deathbed by a Fr. Andrew Connellan, the then parish priest in Feakle, which will also be on display at the lecture.

Biddy died on April 22, 1874 and twenty-seven priests attended the subsequent funeral. The oil stock was presented to Clare Museum through the wishes of a West Clare priest who died last year.

Next Thursday’s lecture will take place at the East Clare Heritage Centre in St Cronan’s Chrurch and begins at 8.30 p.m.
