De Valera Telegram On Display
Irish Independent, Tuesday, 1st December, 2009
A Telegram from Eamon de Valera to his wife, confirming his election win as MP a year after the Easter Rising, has gone on public display at the Clare Museum.
The historic document reveals the republican leader beat Patrick Lynch of the Irish Party in the 1917 Clare by-election by 2,975 votes. It was sent to Mrs de Valera in Munster Street, Phibsboro, in Dublin’s northside and is simply signed ‘Dev’.
Before being restored, the telegram had become discoloured and brittle.
The telegram
has been placed on display alongside a comprehensive account of the first
meeting of Clare County Council held on April 22, 1899.
