A man whose name is synonymous with the pioneering days and triumphant initiatives of Shannon Airport, was honoured this Thursday, February 8th, by An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern.
Aptly titled, Empowered the People: the Career and Achievements of Dr Brendan O’Regan, the exhibition presented by the Clare Museum, Ennis, marks the ground-breaking projects that lifted the fledging Rineanna airport and the surrounding Shannon area into the international spotlight.
One of Ireland’s most noted peace ambassadors and initiators of commercial and industrial initiatives, Brendan O’Regan’s achievements include the setting up of the world’s first Duty Free Shop at Shannon Airport and the establishment of Co-Operation Ireland, which set up cultural, educational and commercial links between Northern Ireland and the Republic.
The exhibition, honouring Dr O’Regan’s high profile achievements, was launched by Taoiseach Ahern and attended by local Oireachtas members, local authority officials and elected members, tourism sector representatives and members of the business community. Guest speakers included the Mayor of Clare, Cllr. Flan Garvey and the Mayor of Ennis, Cllr. Joe Reidy.
