Earth: The Riches of Clare

Decorated Bronze Axehead

Dating from the Early Bronze Age, this flanged decorated bronze axehead comes from Lough Reavac, County Clare. After an initial copper phase, bronze, made from a mixture of copper and tin, was developed. Bronze was much harder metal than copper and the tin required to make it came from County Wicklow and Cornwall in Britain.
