Earth: The Riches of Clare

Galena

Mineral

From Kilbrecin silvermine in Quin, County Clare.

This ore of lead was found occurring with silver in a now disused mine. Characteristic cubes and high density make it easy to identify.

The large volume of galena that is processed for lead produces enough silver as a by-product to make galena the leading ore of silver. Its colour is lead to silver grey and sometimes with a bluish tint. Its lustre is metallic to dull and the crystals are opaque.
