Earth: The Riches of Clare

Perforated Mace Head

Neolithic in date, most mace heads have been found deposited in graves, bogs and rivers. Because so many of them have been found broken in half, it seems likely that the act of breaking them had a ritual significance. This one comes from Coolvawn, Doonbeg, County Clare.
