Spokeshave

This is a two-handled tool for working on rounded stock. It can have a flat or rounded base for convex or concave surfaces. The name comes from a time when wheelrights made spokes for wooden wheels.

A Spokeshave is the ideal tool for removing large quantities of waste around the centre of a column of wood. The carpenter would work from the middle of the piece towards each end, as the grain direction allows, he would keep turning the workpiece and remove shavings as he goes, and in so doing would be able to make a perfect cylinder. With the blade of a spokeshave set for a fine cut, it is possible to work against the grain

This carpenter’s tool was used for shaping spokes or spindles for chairs.
