Energy: The Riches of Clare

Road Bowl

Road Bowling was once a popular sport in rural Clare, now confined to counties Armagh and Cork.

Road Bowling is of uncertain origin, but it emerged in its present form during the 18th Century, and for a time stone bowls and iron bowls were used.

Today the game is played with a 28oz cast iron bowl, and is played on selected public roads, where the aim is to cover the course in the least number of shots.
