Faith: The Riches of Clare

Church Slate

This roof slate was found in the mid-1980’s at the site of Kilfiddane church in the Diocese of Killaloe, Barony of Clonderlaw, and dates to the medieval period.

The site was surveyed by the 19th century antiquarian T J Westropp, the father of archaeology in Clare, who recorded that the parish church of Kilfeddan measured 67 feet 6 inches long by 18 feet wide. He also recorded that the south door was pointed, and the west gable had a round arched bell chamber.

Kilfiddane Church is reputed to have been built by St Senan. A nearby holy well is dedicated to him.
