Ammunition from Howth Gun Running / Medal 1924 The bullet shown here is reputed to have come from the Howth gun-running incident. In May 1914 Erskine Childers and Darrell Figgis purchased 1,500 rifles and ammunition from Germany for the Irish Volunteers which were landed at Howth, Co Dublin in August. Soldiers sent to apprehend the consignment were responsible for shooting three people in a hostile crowd on their way back to barracks. This Medal of Honour was presented by Colonel R H Car-Ellison CMG to T Mc Mahon of the Royal Hibernian Military School, who was selected by his comrades as the most deserving of this prize during the year 1924.
