Power: The Riches of Clare

Deputy Lieutenant of Clare, Uniform This uniform was made in Dublin in 1886 for a member of the Westby family of Roebuck Castle, County Dublin, and Kilballyowen and Rosroe, County Clare. Both Edward Percival Westby and his son Francis Vandaleur Westby were Deputy Lieutenants in Clare. The role of Deputy Lieutenant was as follows: ‘ …responsible for all matters connected with the due and vigorous execution of the law, the effectual preservation of public peace, the condition and wages of constables, in short, everything pertaining to the good order and government of the county’. This uniform has been generously loaned to Clare Museum from Cork Public Museum. Ref: CPM:1952:257/1-4 Anglo
