Power: The Riches of Clare
|
De Valera Banner The East Clare by-election of 1917 resulted from the death of sitting MP Major Willie Redmond on the Western Front and confirmed both the status of Sinn Fein as a force and Commandant Eamon de Valera as a major player on the political stage. This banner, hanging at the back of the display case in this photograph, was used during the 1917 by-election campaign. It features a photograph of Eamon de Valera in his Irish Volunteers Uniform, reminding the viewer of his role in the 1916 Rising in Dublin. The imagery of the Phoenix rising from the flames and the motto of “Eirim chun mo ghníomh a chriochnú”, or “I arise to complete my task”, now feature on the Clare Champion newspaper. Ref: 2000.117 |
