Power: The Riches of Clare

Silver Ring

Ballykinlar Internment Camp in County Down was a detention centre for Republican Prisoners during the War of Independence. While incarcerated there the internees passed the time producing arts and crafts, their own magazine called “Barbed Wire” and even their own money.

This silver ring is an example of the craftwork carried out at the camp, and was made by Michael J.Crimmins, a native of Newmarket-on-Fergus, while detained there between 1920-1921.
