Vetterli Rifle The Vetterli rifle is named after its Swiss designer, Friedrich Vetterli. Adopted by the Swiss army in 1868 and later by the Italian military, the Vetterli was the most advanced military rifle of its time, as it was the first repeating rifle widely adopted for military service. This model here is an Italian M1870/87 Vetterli-Vitali rifle, modified with the Vitali box magazine system, and was found hidden in a farm outhouse in Dysart. Ref: 2000.119 Clare
