Water: The Riches of Clare
|
Lifering from The Leon This lifering is one of the remnants of the Leon XIII which in 1907 foundered off the rocks on which one of the vessels of the Spanish Armanda had been shipwrecked three centuries previously. The fishermen from Quilty braved the
stormy waters to go out in their canvas covered currachs to rescue the
French sailors. Their heroic exploits were later rewarded by the French
government when it helped fund the new church at Quilty. |
