The clerk's report was read to the following effect.
That the poor rate collecter for the Miltown District, Mr. Thomas Morony, died on 14th
inst. Medical Report. New cases admitted to hospital and infirmary; fever 8,
dysentery and diarrhea 14, measles 8, total 30.
Died within the week, fever 2, dysentery 2, one infant under treatment on Saturday. Fever
hospital 26, infirmary 70, total 96.
I feel it my duty again to remind the vice guardians that the number in the house is over
that sanctioned by the Commissioners' sealed order. We had one death of dysentery within
the week at Lahinch House.Sandfield, as usual, healthy.

The following orders were Read:
Sealed order dated 8th September presenting a form of rate books in accordance with the
act 12th and 13th Vic Cap 104.
Sealed order 15th September, appointing the Reverend M. Connolly as chaplain to the
Sandfield Workhouse at a salary of £30 per annum.
Sealed order 13th September 1849, authorizing out door relief to certain classes to 20th
inst. inclusive.
The following letters of the P.L.C. and others were Read and orders given thereon.
- 12th September 1849, returning the industrial reports of the Union for
correction.
- 14th September 1849, directing the respective books to be kept in accordance with the
24th section of 12th and 13th Vic Cap 104.
- 14th September 1849, enclosing sealed order about the form of rate to be followed in
future.
- 15th September 1849, enclosing bill of costs of Messrs. Geale and Dwyer for preparation
of leases £51-14-1.
- 19th September 1849, intimating that the industrial report attached to minutes of
proceedings of 4th, 5th, and 6th inst. was very unsatisfactory.
- 19th September 1849, declining to approve of any departure from the sealed order
limiting the numbers in the workhouse.
[267] The master required the following articles for the use
of the workhouse, 100 pairs of blankets, 300 rugs, 1000 yards calico, 500 yards bengal
stripe, 50 yards calico, 500 yards check, 500 yards ticking, 3 cups and saucers, 1 cream
ewer and water jug for assistant master, 1 gallon of marking ink, 14 lbs blue lace, 14 lbs
white thread, 2 dozen of rugs, 500 yards lining calico, 30 dozen of thimbles, 600 needles,
No. 3. Ordered that the respective articles be procured from the contractors.
In accordance with the resolution of the vice guardians of the 5th inst. to appoint a
competent person as overseer of able bodied male paupers,
Resolved
- That John Hanlon, formerly an overseer of out door relief, be now appointed at
a salary of £8/0 perweek, and that he be required to attend at the workhouse each day
from 7 o'clock a.m. 'til 7 o'clock p.m.
The milk contractor for Lahinch Auxiliary Workhouse being most irregular in the daily
delivering of supplies, Resolved that he be written to by the clerk that the supply of
milk be delivered at, or before, 8 o'clock each morning.
[268] Owing to the death of the poor rate collector for the
division of Miltown,
Resolved
- That an advertisement be inserted in the local papers for a person qualified to
perform the duties, that the rate of poundage be 1/0 as herefore paid and that the
election take place in next board day.
- That the following tenders be accepted for the supply of Indian meal for the entire
union for out door relief for 3 months from 29th September 1849 allowing 21 lbs per ton
for waste in distribution.Messrs. J. N. Russell and Son, best Indian meal £7-6-6, to be
stored at the risk of the contractor and distributed at his expense and for indoor
supplies Messrs. J. N. Russell and Son, barley meal £6-16-8, oatmeal £9-10, and Messrs.
Bannatyne and Son for indoor supplies, Indian meal £7-2-0 per ton and rye meal £6-10-0,

Medical Report
13 new cases of fever admitted to fever hospital of dysentery, measles, etc. 15 have
been admitted to infirmary. The deaths: fever 1, dysentery, diarrhea, measles 5.
Remaining under treatment ininfirmary 70, fever hospital 32, total 102.
We had 5 deaths of dysentery and measles at Lahinch within the week.

The following orders of the P.L.C were before the board.
Sealed order dated the 22nd day of September 1849, authorising the removal of
John Murphy from the situation of relieving officer.
Sealed order directing a re-election of the board of guardians of the union on the 1st day
of November 1849.
The following letters of the P.L.C were read and orders given thereon.
The vice-guardians having taken into consideration the expediency of appointing an
assistant schoolmaster for the Miltown Malbay workhouse in the stead of Mr. Kelly who has
been acting as master and who is not deemed qualified to discharge the duties of the
office,
Resolved that the resignation of Mr. Kelly be called for and that an assistant
schoolmaster be appointed at a salary of £20 per annum with an apartment and rations, the
election to take place on Wednesday the 10th October 1849.
In consequence of the dismissal from office of Mr. Murphy, relieving officer of Kilonahan
District,and the resignation of Mr. Michael Hynes, relieving officer of Burren district,
Resolved that advertisement be inserted in the local papers for a
relieving officer for each of the above districts, the former at a salary of £25 per
annum, and the latter at a salary of £45 heretofore paid and that the election take place
on Wednesday 10th October 1849.

Medical Report
On Saturday last there were 35 in fever hospital and 71 in infirmary. There were eight
deaths in the parent house during the week and five at Lahinch Auxilary Establishment.

6th day of October inclusive.
The following letters of the P.L.C were read:
- 26th September 1849, about the instalments due for advances of £8400 for
building workhouse.
Resolved that the Commissioners be informed that no part of the loan has
been repaid and the funds of the Union are in an embarrased state that they cannot at
present repay any of the instalments.
- 22nd September 1849, requirng the monthly liabilities and collection of the rates by 1st
of October 1849.
Ordered that the return be forwarded with the least possible delay.
- 1st October 1849, requiring a return respecting current rates to be forwarded on or
before the 6th inst.
Ordered that this return be immediately forwarded.
- 29th September 1849, intimating that Mr. Briscoe was appointed inspector of this union.

- 2nd October 1849, about the copy of the collectors balance checks not having been
forwarded regularly of late.
Ordered that these returns be regularly fowarded weekly.
- 2nd October 1849, about the excess of inmates in the workhouse over the limitation of
the sealed order and directing that the number be immediately reduced.
- 28th September 1849, enclosing memorial from Widow Sharry praying for outdoor relief.
- 2nd October 1849, suggesting the appointment of a wards master.
Requirements for the Ballykeale Auxiliary House.
3 doz. pair of cards, 500 yds. of calico for boys shirts, 40 lbs. angola thread
for stockings, 6 lbs knitting thread, 1 popes head brush.
In the parent house
2 doz. woolen wheels, 3 doz. pair cards, 1 doz. shovels, 4 doz. white wash brushes, 4 doz.
sweeping brushes, 1 doz. bass brooms, 6 gross knitting needles, 2 dozen grate brushes, 400
giant platters, 200 pint saucepans, 2 boxes tin, 6 shoemakers knives, 2 doz. awls, 1000
yds corduroy, 500 yds bengal stripe, 500 yds of ticking, 50lbs. black cotton thread, 4
doz. buckets, 300 pair of mens' shoes, and 200 womens' shoes.

In the Miltown aux. workhouse.
30 desks and 30 forms, 1 desk for schoolmaster and for the parent house, 3 doz. forms for
the male and female dayrooms.
Ordered that the above be procurred from the respective contractors.
The ablebodied male paupers having been removed from Sandfield Auxilary Workhouse to the
parent house and the nurses and infants transferred to Sandfield,
Resolved that Mrs. Griffin, matron of Lahinch Auxiliary Workhouse, be removed to
Sandfield to take charge of that establishment; that an advertisement be inserted in the
local paper and General Advertiser for a person to act as matron at Lahinch in the room of
Mrs. Griffin at a salary of £15 per annum with an apartment and the usual rations,
appointment to take place on 17th inst. and that Mr. Lysaght, who had been acting as
master of Sandfield Workhouse, be employed temporarily in assisting in bringing up the
arrears in the books of the workhouse,
[309] Mr. Reynolds having gone to another union without completing them
or giving the vice guardians any notice of his intention to leave. The nurse of the fever
hospital having been met on Saturday last, by the vice guardians, on her way to Ennistymon
without having asked their permission to absent herself from the duties and in their
informing her she should not have done so, she immediately returned and stated a similar
circumstance should not again occur, but, on the vice guardians visiting the workhouse and
fever hospital at nine o' clock the same evening they discovered that she had been absent
from six o'clock and did not return until half past nine o'clock, having the fever
hospital in charge of paupers nurses notwithstanding the caution she had received in the
morning of the same day.
Resolved that Mrs. Sexton be severely censored and informed if her future conduct
and the state of her hospital be not more to the satisfaction of the vice guardians she
will be required to resign her situation.
Numerous appeals having already been lodged against the present rate, and the vice
guardians anticipating a greater number,
Resolved that the clerk do write to Mr. Cullinan, solicitor, to secure
his professional services at the ensuing sessions.
Proposals for supplying the Moymore Temporary Fever Hospital with new and skim milk having
been laid before the vice guardians,
Resolved that the tender of John Liddy be accepted viz. new milk 7 1/4d per pottle
of 8 quarts, skim milk 6d per pottle of 8 quarts. The vice guardians having taken into
consideration the appointment of a collector for the Kilshanny district,
Resolved that Mr. Pat Jourdan be appointed and the sureties named Mr. Comerford of
Galway and Mr. Considine, Liscannor, be accepted.

Michael Curtin having declined to enter into bond for supplying mutton for the fever
hospital and auxiliary work house at Miltown Malbay at 3 3/4d per lb,
Resolved that the tender of Martin Curtin for supply of same article at 4 1/4d (as
the next lowest offer) be accepted.
The collecting book and list of arrears of rate having been examined by the vice
guardians,
Resolved that the following rates be declared unrecoverable for the reason stated
viz. Killilagh £29
..... to be a holding of land in the possession of Major McNamara
satisfactorily proved there is no such farm.
