Medical Report
Margaret Considine an asthmatic woman aged 80 years, died on the 12th inst. of
apoplexy in the infirm ward. We have 45 patients in the infirmary and 35 in fever
hospital, where we had 2 deaths since the commencement of the month, namely Biddy Linnane
on the 2nd and Bryan O'Loughlin on the 3rd. The fever has been of a much worse character
during this month than previously. Since the opening of the hospital we had to refuse
admittance to several in the commencement of the month for want of room. Indeed we are
always overcrowded as I believe we never have less than 5 to 10 patients more than the
hospital was intended to accommodate.

Read petition of the guardian of the North Dublin Union to the legislature on the
subject of certain amendments in the Poor Law and bearing date 31st March 1846.
Read commissioners' letter of the 22nd inst accompanying a copy of a letter which they had received from Mr O'Brien agent to the Minors Stackpooles respecting the rent due of the workhouse site.
Resolved
that the shoemaker be supplied with 1 doz awls, 2lbs of sewing hemp, 2lbs of heel tack, 1lb of wax.Medical Report
There are 37 patients in the infirmary, Biddy O'Loughlin a child aged 6 days died
there on the 17th of convulsions. We have 39 in fever hospital John Conole aged 40 died on
the 23rd of fever. The commodes in the fever hospital are all broken.

- that Mr Kenny, Mr O'Dwyer and Mr Stack be appointed a committee to investigate the
collectors' accounts with a view to ascertain why they made overlodgements and report to
the board of guardians on this day fortnight. The committee to meet on Tuesday the 5th May
next.
With reference to the commissioners' letter of the 8th inst.
- that the board considering that the revision cannot be acted on have determined not to
give any compensation to the revisors.
[65] - that John Donohue, contractor for building boundary against on
this day week unless same be finished.
- that the resignation of Lawrence Egan schoolmaster be accepted.
Francis G. Morony gives notice that he will on the 1st May next move to put the bond of the contractor for building the stables in suit in the event of same being not finished, and also that of the contractor for building the shoemaker's workshop.

- that an advertisement be put forward for a schoolmaster against this day fortnight.
- that tenders be invited for 3,000 boxes of turf to be delivered on the 1st of August
next and tenders for a lesser quantity will be considered from different persons on this
day week.
- that 10 barrels of lime are required for white washing and for the use of the privies.

[69] The committee ordered at the last meeting having met on the 5th
inst. to investigate the collectors accounts with the view of ascertaining why they made
overlodgements from time to time, have come to the following conclusions on enquiry from 2
of the collectors who attended.
That the guardians having pressed and threatened with law proceedings the collectors to
pay up the rates in order to provide for the apprehended scarcity, they have at
inconvenience to themselves advanced the money as stated in their respective accounts but
now having received instructions to the contrary there will be no cause of future
complaint on that head.
The clerk laid the annual report of the Cowpock Institution dated Dublin 1846 before
the board.

Medical Report
We have 35 patients in the fever hospital and 46 in the infirmary. We had 3 deaths in
this month, one of them from fever.
[71] I regret to say that some cases of fever have thrown themselves in
the alt="" of the house and that I have been obliged to refuse yesterday 7 patients at the
fever hospital. I strongly urge on the guardians the necessity of increased fever hospital
relief.

house for the sum of £5-0-0 and further that he be paid the sum of £2-10-0 per annum for
cleaning same twice in every year hereforth.
- that the following articles for the use of the fever hospital be procured viz. a
workhouse table, pot, 30 spitting cups, 10 chamber utensils.
[82] - that tenders for 40 box beds be invited again this day week.
Medical Report
Fever continues on the increase and we have had a great many children from the alt="" of
the house in fever making in all 44 in the fever hospital. We have 40 patients in the
infirmary, a great many of them without bedsteads, and I have to request the board will
take measures to procure some. I would prefer the box bedsteads. We have had 3 deaths.

- that the following be the dietary of the workhouse for the present: oatmeal the usual
quantity morning and evening with 12 oz of bread for adults, 8 oz for children between 6
and 15 and 6 oz for children between 2 and 6. on Sunday in place of stirabout.
Molasses 3 mornings in the week and 1/2 pint of milk to each at all other meals.
Resolved
that the following clothing be purchased from Mr.O'Dwyer at the last prices for the same description viz.In reference to the commissioners' letter of the 25th inst. I am directed to reply that
the Board are not aware of the wives of any convicts in the union (save one namely Mary
Coughlan and her 4 children now inmates of the workhouse whose husband was transported
from a quarter sessions held at Kilrush in County of Clare in the year 1843 for horse
stealing).

Resolved that the following in addition to the foregoing clothing be
purchased from Mr Pat O'Dwyer 240 yds linsey woolsey for 80 womens outside peticoats &
240 yds. twilled callico for 80 women's inside peticoats; 120 yds linsey woolsey for 80
girls peticoats & 40 yds flannel for 40 young children peticoats, 50 waistcoats for
men and 40 yds of grey calico for bodies of peticoats, 7 lbs of black and 7 lbs of
housewife's thread, 1 gross of buttons.

state of the union funds.
The clerk laid queries respecting the newly appointed collectors before the board.
In reference to the medical report, resolved that the follwing dietary be for the
present adopted;
For adults:
7oz of meal for breakfast, 12 oz of bread for dinner, molasses 3 mornings in the week, and
1/2 pint of milk the remaining meals.
Children between 6 and 15.
5 oz of meal for breakfast, 8 oz of bread for dinner, molasses 3 mornings in the week and
1/2 pint of milk the remaining meals.
Children between 2 and 6.
3 oz of meal for breakfast, 6 oz of bread for dinner, molasses 3 mornings in the week and
1/2 pint of milk the remaining meals.
Sick, at the discretion of the medical officer.

In as much as it has frequently occurred that the milk delivered by the contractor is
sometimes found to be sour and unfit for use in breach of the contract and as great
inconvenience has arisen in consequence of returning such milk,
Resolved that milk of the aforesaid description shall be kept by the
master for the use of the paupers and not to be by him included in the account.
Medical Report
We had one death in the fever hospital on the 1st inst. of a patient named Michael
McGuire. 49 patients still remain under treatment and I am sorry to say that the fever is
not as yet on the decrease in the workhouse. Honor Hogan died of asthma in the infirmary
on the 1st inst. and 42 still remain under medical treatment. I don't think stirabout
twice a day is agreeing with the inmates as it is producing dyspeptic complaints and
diarrhea. The medicines mentioned in the accompanying list are wanted for the use of the
surgery.

The annual report of the security of officers was laid before the board signed by the

Resolved
- that Martin Tuohy's tender at 18/- each be accepted for 40 bed steads.
[88] - that the collectors be called upon to send in and give up to the
clerk their old warrants.
- that William Conole be called upon to pay in to the treasurer the surplus money which he
has collected in Liscannor Electoral Division and which he has not accounted for as yet,
amounting to £10-5-6.
- that the several collectors be called upon to pay in their several balances and to
collect and lodge the last rate made within one month from this date.
- that the board do forego the following sums in the following Electoral Divisions as
uncollectable viz. Liscannor 4d, Corofin 2s 7d, Burren 11s 7 1/4d Drumcreehy 4s 11
1/4d.
In as much as the contractor for building the stables and coach house has not completed
his contract,
- that in pursuance of our resolution of the 27th of March 1846 that the clerk do instruct
our solicitor to write to James McDonough of Ennistymon the contractor and to Pat O'Dwyer
of same place and to Pat Jordan of Cahiremore (his sureties) that their bond will be put
in suit within a week from the date of his letter, unless countermanded by the board. It
is further resolved in pursuance of our resolution of the 24th of April 1846 that a
similiar letter be written in reference to the contract for building the boundary wall and
piggory [sic] specifying the name of the contractor and his sureties, viz.
[89] John Donohue of Dough O'Connor the contractor, Thomas Considine of
Lahinch and Michael Lysaght of Liscannor (his sureties).
Resolved
