Medical Report
We have 26 patients in the fever hospital. In the infirmary and infirm wards we have
85. Of these a great number are cases of diarrhea. I do not think Indian meal for
breakfast and dinner is doing well. I would think it prudent to let them have whole
meal or flour baked for the dinner instead of Indian meal, the stirabout of Indian meal as
before in the mornings. I hope by this means the diarrhea may be checked, and I do
not think there will be any loss. I beleive it will effect a saving. I think
our dietary may be altered and that diet No.6 should be 3 pints of barley water and 1 pint
of milk. The barley water may be sweetened with liquorice root or sugar. We had 3 deaths
since last report, Pat Doherty, aged 8, Mick Tuthill aged 10, and Ellen Mc Inerney, a
child aged 5 years, all of diarrhea.

Read commissioners' letter
- of the 18th inst. requiring a certain return of the numbers of persons to whom out
door relief was given for each of the 4 weeks ended 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th inst
respectively.
- of the 21st inst. requiring to be supplied with a return of the number of able bodied
male adults receiving relief in and out of the workhouse on the 4th Dec 1847, 1st Jan.,
5th Feb and 4th March 1848. Also the dates of every order that has been received to
authorize the grant of out door relief specifying the cases, if any, in which out door
relief was given in money.
- of the 22nd inst. requiring a return of the electoral divisions, if any, which comprise
the property of a single individual or of 2 proprietors only.

- of the 22nd inst. with respect to the observations of Doctor Collins, resident of the
College of Physiciary, on the prevention of contagious diseases.
In reference to the medical officers' report, ordered that the change in dietary
prescribed by him be adopted.
The schoolmaster and schoolmistress having tendered their resignations,
Resolved that they be accepted.
Ordered that the clerk do advertise for tenders from competent persons to fill the situation of schoolmaster and schoolmistress.
Resolved that the rates made by the board of guardians of this union, on the first day of October 1847, be quashed in as much as they are illegal, the amount of arrears then due not having been inserted in the rate books nor included in the warrants.

Medical Report.
We have 22 patients in the fever hospital and in the infirmary and infirm wards 88
labouring under chronic and cutaneous diseases and diarrhea. There are 4 nursetenders in
the infirimary and 3 in the fever hospital all from the house. Some time since the extra
diet allowed to them was stopped. I think it would be prudent to restore it to them as
they have a great deal to do. It will help to enable them to resist disease, it will give
them an interest in doing their duty, and it will give me a greater check over them.
We had 3 deaths since last report. Joney Mc Namara aged 7 of diarrhea after fever,
Margaret Doherty of decline, aged 10 and an old man Tim O 'Connors, only one day in the
house, of diarrhea.

Ennistymon Union.
The vice guardians will receive proposals after 12 o'clock at noon on Thursday 13th of
April for making certain alterations and repairs in the school house at Lahinch according
to specifications to be seen at the workhouse.

Ordered
that an order be made and given to the shoemaker of the house for 1 hide of sole leather, 1 calf skin, 2 1b heel tacks, 2,000 pavers, 1 lb wax, 1 hammer, 1 dozen sewing divls, 1/2 gallons neatsfoot oil, 2,000 tacks, and that the master gets an order for 100 tin platters at 4d each, 100 tin pints at 2d each, 50 tin quarts at 3 1/2d each.[8]

William Carroll's tender for 500 to be completed on the 20th of May next.
John Herbert's and Thomas Russell's for 497 to be completed before the 6th July next.

Medical Report
We have 101 patients under medical treatment, the greater number suffering from
diarrhea, of which disease 3 died during the week. There are 30 patients in the fever
hospital. We had 11 new cases of fever during the week of which 1 died.

- that the recommendation of the medical attendants with regard to extra allowances to the
nursery be adopted.
- that the clerk do advertize for tenders for the supply of the following articles, viz.
milk, lime and sweeping brushes, black lead, iron spoons, horn combs, horn buttons, sewing
needles, knitting needles, black and white tape, marking ink, oils, chamber and house
buckets, chamber utensils, commode pans, pearl and french barley, tin ladles, roach lime,
straw, tobacco, medicines.

furnished by him.

the agent of the British Relief Association for an advance of £500 to be repaid out of

Medical Report
We have 112 patients under medical treatment in the infirmary and infirm wards, and 33 in
fever hospital. There were 9 new cases of fever during the week and 5 deaths, 4 from
diarrhea, 1 from dysentery. We would want 10 commodes for the use of the infirmary.

Read tenders for the situtation of relieving officer from the following persons.

Resolved that Henry Daly be appointed relieving officer for Ennistymon Electoral Division at a salary of £40 per annum.
Read the following tenders for alterations in the intended school house at
Lahinch, Messrs. John Herbert and Martin Tuohey, house £438, porch £30, total £474.
[6] From Francis O'Donohue, house £449-10-0, porch £43, total
£492-10-0.
Resolved that the tender of Messrs. Herbert and Tuohey be accepted.
In consequence of the boundary wall being but 6 feet from the outside, and 4 feet from
the inside in height, and having been originally built with dry stones, it is no longer a
security against communication between the inmates of the workhouse and their outdoor
friends, and the schoolmaster, having crossed the wall at 6 o'clock in the morning and not
having returned to the house until 12 o'clock, and from the general insubordination
arising out of the facility of ingress and egress, the vice guardians have not the control
necessary to the well being of the establishment.

Resolved that tenders for rebuilding and raising the wall be advertised for.
Resolved that Mr. Henry Whitstone, architect, of Ennis, be appointed to superintend
the works now executing by Mr. Carroll.

Medical Report
There are 100 patients under medical treatment at present, the greater number of whom
are suffering from diarrhea, which I am happy to say is on the decrease. We have 39
patients in fever hospital and had 16 new cases since this day week. There were 10 deaths,
8 from diarrhea, 1 from dysentery, and a child a few days old from convulsions.
