Medical Report:
The house continues to improve as you will perceive from the mortality during the
month as compared with that of the last four up to this the last day of February.
The deaths between this house and Lahinch have been 53. During the
month of January they had been l85. We have l39 patients in infirmary and ll0 in
fever wards, 20 new cases of fever during the weekend and 12 deaths here and 2 at Lahinch,
5 from fever, 2 dysentery, 2 measles, l small pox and l from diarrhea. I have to
observe that during the month I frequently had to give orders on the relief officers for
money payments owing to the number of bowel and other affections which I considered more
from badly cooked Indian meal, food, fuel, being scarce and dear and also from the want of
adequate covering to protect many of them from the cold of this inclement season of the
year. I would, therefore, recommend the vice guardians to provide rye meal for
O.D.R. and give a choice to such persons as cannot provide fuel, something aut also to be
done to have such wretched creatures off the works as have not sufficient covering.

[6] Read sealed order bearing date 27th day of March approving
the Rev.John McMahon, chaplain to the auxiliary workhouse, Miltown Malbay at a salary of
10 per annum.
Read letters:-
- The Central Board of Health, 9th March, l849, enclosing copy of a communication
from Mr. McNamara about establishing a F.H. at Corofin.
- 9th March, l849, intimating that the R. officers need not proceed with the election.
- 10th March, l849, about Mr. Stack being in arrears as immediate lessor not to operate
against him in case of E. of guardians.
- The Secretary, Education Officer l0th March, l849, approving of the manner in which the
workhouse school is conducted.
- 12th March, l849 about Ballykeale House.
[7] Resolved
- That the clerk be directed to invite tenders by handbills for competent persons willing
to undertake the situation of steward in the respective stone breaking depots of the Union
at a salary of 10/0 per week
- tenders to be taken into consideration on this day week.
- That the clerk be directed to inform the Commissioner that in reply of their letter of
the 12th inst., no. 4294, Mr. Comerford would not let the house at Ballykeale except in
the terms that any partitions taken down in the dwelling house should be replaced, this
seemed to the vice guardians reasonable and as there were not many such would not involve
a great expense, if even the premises chanced to be surrendered. The vice guardians
are not bound to put the offices in the same state further than replacing the racks and
mangers which are preserved for that purpose, the outlay is not likely to exceed
200, and the greater portion is for cooking and washing apparatus all of which are to be
taken away by the vice guardians if the premises be surrendered. Winding doors etc put
into the offices are to be deemed to be an improvement and not any injury. A right of
passage to the house is clearly understood as granted and no such difficulty will be
raised by Mr. Comerford. Mr.Comerford would be willing to give any portion of land at
[8] fair rent, if required, but there are large day yards, and
passages between the dwelling house and offices ample for all purposes of air and exercise
unless the Commissioners desire to add any land for horticultural purposes. The reason of
the agreement about the plank was that the vice guardians were unwilling to increase the
expense of flooring the offices if to be tennanted only for 12 months, but if the house be
occupied more than a year or permanently as a workhouse the plank being on the spot would
be useful to work up and make permanently flooring. The suggestion of having them now
valued is most desirable and had been previously determined on by the vice guardians.
Resolved:-
- That James Gilligan be employed at 4/0 per week with rations to take charge of the
shoe making department during the illness in fever of the master shoemaker.
[9] - That the Commissioner be respectfully requested to apply to the
Commissioner of Public Works to grant their order to the County Surveyor for supply of
l000 stone breaking hammers, 50 sledges, 40 crow bars, l00 wheel and hand barrows for the
outdoor recipients of relief.
- that the tender of Pat Quinn be accepted for glazing and replacing the windows of the
auxiliary workhouse at Lahinch at 4d per pane.
- That the following tenders be accepted for the supply of provisions and necessaries for
the Auxiliary Workhouse, Miltown Malbay for six months from 25th March, to 29th September,
