Part 2: Chapter 10: Kilfinaghta Parish: Ballycullen Townland

Description of site:
An examination of the relevant 6” O.S. sheet will show that this site occurs on the Barony boundary, with half of the ringfort in Tulla Lower Barony and the remainder in the Barony of Bunratty Lower.

Field examination found it to be a difficult site to study due to the depth of the vegetation cover. While much of the interior is free of all but seasonal vegetation the same cannot be said of the bank area. A deal of furze occurs though trees also grow on this single bank area. Such covering, of course, made an examination of the bank area difficult. Where such a feature could be traced it averaged only ½ metre in height, with its maximum of 1 metre in the south. The average width centres on 2 ½ metres.

It was not possible to locate the probable original entrance though this may have been from the south.

This ringfort is of a circular shape. Field work suggested an internal diameter of some 25 metres.

No other features of note were observed at this site.
