Description of stones:
In the immediate area
of Walton Lodge, Ballysheen Beg Townland, the map represents five different
standing stones. Great care must be taken when
dealing with these. Why? On the drive up to Walton Lodge a crude altar
type arrangement of large stones occur. This, I feel, was erected in the
last century to decorate the driveway area. It is supposed to represent
some type of stone tomb. Such a feature was erected by the Walton family.
Now, in relation to the concentration of five standing stones in such
a small area. There is the strong possibility that these were likewise
erected and are of no archaeological or historical interest. My view on
the matter is that they are of late nineteenth century erection date.
As there is the possibility, but quite a remote one I feel, that such
stones may be of archaeological – historical interest I give some
information on their features:-

Field examination failed to find any trace of this stone during 1978. Checking
locally I was told it had been knocked over by a tractor in the early 1970’s
and removed from the field. |
