Part 2: Chapter 10: Kilfinaghta Parish: Moygalla Townland

Description of site:
An examination of the relevant 1922 Edition 6” O.S. sheet suggests that this site has a double bank and fosse. Such evidence is limited to a small area to the south-east. However field examination failed to find any evidence of an outer bank or fosse. Hence the reason for the question mark after the classification types above.

What field work did find was a site in a poor condition. Two factors are responsible for this condition. To the east the site is masked beneath a vegetation covering of elder, ash and hawthorn trees. Their presence has restricted movement over this part of the site. What of the western area? This has a light vegetation cover, however the problem here is the effect of livestock movement. The single (?) bank has been badly damaged and parts of the interior heavily churned.

Thus both vegetation and livestock movement are responsible for the poor condition of this ringfort. What features could be noted? Over a small area to the west one could trace part of an earthen bank. This averaged 65 cm in height and 2.50 metres in width. No trace of this feature could be observed over the vegetation-covered eastern area.

Because of the previously mentioned heavy vegetation cover one could only suggest, based on field observation, internal measurements for this site. These, as stated previously, suggest an oval shape. The north-south internal diameter centred on 25 metres while that for the east-west area was some 20 metres. There is no known folklore associated with this site.
