Description of site:
Here we have the site of a double banked ringfort, with intervening
fosse, which is in a fair condition. (Refer to site section number 7, volume
1). The inner bank is best represented in the northern area where it is
almost ½ metre high. There is little trace of this bank to the south.
In relation to the outer bank and fosse the following may be stated. It
is difficult to examine these in both the northern and western areas due
to the presence of a heavy vegetation cover. In the east all traces of
this bank and fosse have been removed – a farm trackway now exists
on the site (see section). Thus it is only in the southern part that the
outer bank and fosse can be measured and examined. Here the space between
the top of the inner and outer banks is 4 ½ metres with a fosse
depth of little more than ½ metre maximum.
The internal diameter of the site is 53 metres north-south by some 50
metres east-west. This area is quite marshy, with a deal of bullmarsh
present. Cattle move through this site and though probably responsible
for the poor nature of the inner bank do not seem to have damaged the
sites interior. There is no evidence to suggest the site of the original
entrance.
Water was no difficulty at this site – there is a stream below
it to the north.
