Ecclesiastical Enclosures -  Monuments of County Clare

A large proportion of old church sites and graveyards around the country are on sites of Early Christian ecclesiastical foundations which were originally surrounded by large enclosures, often circular or oval in plan. As well as an early church and burial ground, these enclosures contained dwellings and workshops. There are 23 ecclesiastical enclosures recorded in County Clare.
