A Survey of Monuments of Archaeological and Historical Interest in the Barony of Bunratty Lower, Co. Clare by William Gerrard Ryan

Part 2: Chapter 6: Clonloghan Parish: Lislea Townland

Site A: LEVELLED RINGFORT (Classification type unknown)

6” O.S. Sheet number : 51 (Co. Clare)
Reference : 20.0 cm North; 38.3 cm East
Height : c. 110’ O.D.
Shape : circular, based on O.S. sheet

Description of site:
Here we have the site, only, of a ringfort which was levelled during the 1960’s. Though destroyed only in recent years there was some confusion locally as to its former features. Most said it was of the single banked type though others suggested there may have been a ditch (i.e. fosse). Due to such confusion I will not classify this site.

Field examination failed to find any trace of it. The land about this area has been reclaimed and during such work the site was bulldozed.

Map work suggests an internal diameter both north-south and east-west of some 30 metres. Locals said the bank, prior to destruction, was 1 to 1.50 metres high (maximum) by 2.50 metres wide. No other features are known locally.
