A Survey of Monuments of Archaeological and Historical Interest in the Barony of Bunratty Lower, Co. Clare by William Gerrard Ryan

Part 2: Chapter 8: Feenagh Parish: Deerpark Townland

Site A: RINGFORT (Destroyed – classification type unknown)
6” O.S. Sheet number : 51 (Co. Clare)
Reference : 24.6 cm South; 1.1 cm East
Height : c. 70’ O.D.
Shape : circular (based on map work)

Description of site:
No trace of this site now remains. Unlike in the case of other levelled sites no crop marks could be observed in this area to give one an indication of the site’s size. There was, however, some local knowledge available. This said it was a single banked site, with part of the bank in the eastern area absent. That what remained, in the western part of the site, was said to have been between 1 – 1 ½ metres high by 2 – 2 ½ metres wide. There was no suggestion of a fosse.

Local information and map work suggested the site was of a circular shape. The internal diameters – both north-south and east-west – centred on 35 metres each.

This site, which was finally removed in the early 1970’s, was built on a natural north-south ridge and offered one an extensive view over the surrounding lowlands.
