A Survey of Monuments of Archaeological and Historical Interest in the Barony of Bunratty Lower, Co. Clare by William Gerrard Ryan

Part 2: Chapter 10: Kilfinaghta Parish: Ardmaclancy Townland

Site B: STANDING STONE

6” O.S. Sheet number : 43 (Co. Clare)
Reference : 7.3 cm South; 16.3 cm West

Description of feature:
This, the largest standing stone in the Barony at 1.70 metres high, occurs on the top of Walton Hill (183.8’ O.D.) and has a view over a wide area. Below to the north-west, and clearly visible from it, is Cloonmunnia Stonefort B (Kilmurry Civil Parish).

The stone has four sides which are 35 – 40 cm wide each. Its edges show signs of cattle using it as a scratching post. This of course is a problem one faces with all such features. Were they erected in comparatively recent times as scratching posts or are they of archaeological value? Field examination cannot really tell one.
