A Survey of Monuments of Archaeological and Historical Interest in the Barony of Bunratty Lower, Co. Clare by William Gerrard Ryan

Part 2: Chapter 10: Kilfinaghta Parish: Curraghkilleen Townland

Site B: STONEFORT

6” O.S. Sheet number : 43 (Co. Clare)
Reference : 15.5 cm South; 28.8 cm West
Height : c. 185’ O.D.
Shape : oval, based on field work.

Description of site:
The relevant 6” O.S. (1922 Edition) is now somewhat misleading when one is trying to locate this site. The problem is that extensive land reclamation has taken place in the area of this stonefort, thus not as much outcrop or marshy ground occurs as is represented on the 1922 6” O.S. sheet. Though the stonefort itself was not interfered with large stones uncovered during this reclamation were dumped into the site, especially to the east and south. Added to this dumping is the presence of a heavy vegetation cover over much of the stonefort. Unfortunately much of this covering is of a permanent kind and has made a thorough examination of the site impossible.

Field work did note trace of the single wall to the west. Here along an 18 metre stretch this feature averaged 60 cm in height by 2 metres in width. Due to a combination of heavy vegetation and large stones no trace could be found of the original entrance.

Though a circular shape is suggested for this site on the relevant 6” O.S. sheet (1922) field examination found a more oval shape. Due to the nature of the vegetation cover accurate measurements could not be taken. However field estimates centred on 32 metres for the north-south internal diameter and 26 metres for the east-west one.

There is no known folklore associated with this site.
