A Survey of Monuments of Archaeological and Historical Interest in the Barony of Bunratty Lower, Co. Clare by William Gerrard Ryan

Part 2: Chapter 15: Kilnasoolagh Parish: Kilkieran Townland

6” O.S. Sheet number : 42 (Co. Clare)
Reference : 25.8 cm North; 45.1 cm West
Height : c. 40’ O.D.
Shape : rectangular

Description of site:
Here we have the site of a standing stone which is not marked in on the relevant O.S. sheets. The smoothness of the edges show that cattle use it as a scratching post and this may be the reason why it was erected. This, of course, is a problem one faces with all such type features. The standing stone itself is 1.75 metres high, by a width of c. ½ metre on each of its four sides. It is facing roughly north-south by east-west.
