7.6 Memorial Inscriptions from the Church of Ireland Graveyard, Kilrush

MEMORIAL INSCRIPTIONS
FROM
CHURCH OF IRELAND GRAVEYARD
KILRUSH

By kind permission of the Kilrush Youth Centre: these inscriptions were compiled during 1988 and 1989 and a few were added during 1993 and 1994 under the supervision of the late George Harratt. The four graveyard maps have graves numbered up to 613 less than 350 inscriptions are available as the remainder were at that time indecipherable. Today some of these graves, especially at the southern end of the graveyard, are totally covered with vegetation and it would be difficult to locate a significant number of the actual graves.

It appears that on the graveyard maps one numbering system was used but the typed associated memorial inscriptions sometimes contained two numbers per grave. I believe that I have used the correct one when numbering these graves and where some doubt or no number existed these are denoted by ???. Where available I have included a general location and the mason name in italics. Grave Numbers therefore can only be an indication of location.

Representations of the four Graveyard Maps together with an outline graveyard master map are included at the end as follows:

The original four graveyard maps and the original handwritten and typed memorial inscriptions are and remain the property of the Kilrush Youth Centre and it is recommended that these should also be consulted by anyone trying to locate a specific grave.

All the inscriptions from the Vandeleur Mausoleum and some of the inscriptions on tablets inside the Church of Ireland are also included.

(The Irish Genealogical Research Society, Tombstone Inscriptions, Vol 1, Dublin 2001 in The National Library of Ireland, Dublin, Ref 3B 28 has 27 inscriptions from this graveyard most of which are included here.)
