| Donated Material: Graveyard Inscriptions |
Canon Island Graveyard, Killadysert |
Clare Roots trip to Canon Island – 28 April 2012 Clare Roots Society's first overseas voyage! Our thanks to Fintan Ginnane for taking us there on his fine boat, the Saoirse, for his knowledge of the Abbey and the surrounding islands. We enjoyed the stories of the Abbey from P.J. Ginnane, Fintan's father. Our thanks too to Mary Hester for her help in organising the trip. We recorded and mapped all the gravestone inscriptions in the 12th C Abbey on the island, about 40 in total. Apart from one ancient stone, the earliest date found on the stones was 1819. These are now transcribed and presented to Clare Library to go online in accordance with CRS policy. Transcribers: Liam Barry, Eric Shaw, Fiona de Buitléir, Mary Hester, Frank Barry, Larry Brennan |
