Fortifications in the Shannon Estuary and Galway Bay by Paul M. Kerrigan

Fortifications in Galway Bay: Aughinish Tower and Battery

Some three miles east of Finavarra is the tower at Aughinish, of the same design as that at Finnavarra; the battery no longer exists, but on the evidence of the first edition of the Ordnance Survey of 1842 it was situated just to the west of the tower. There was accommodation for one officer and thirty-nine men, as at the other tower, a basement water tank, a magazine, cellar and store at ground level, and the officer’s and soldiers’ quarters at first-floor level. It seems likely that the tower and battery here were built at the same time as those at Finavarra.
