Clare Castle

Location and Brief Description:
Located three miles from Ennis on main Ennis Limerick Road, Clare Castle was the shipping port for Ennis and mid clare in pre-war days. Boats up to 700 tons can dock there. The dock has extensive coal stores. It is a neat, fairly well kept village.

Parks, Gardens and Recreation Grounds. Brief Description:
There is a good hurling field.

Both water supply and sewerage are bad, an improvement is planned.

Dance Hall: Yes, recently condemned as unsuitable. A new hall is planned. Proprietor: The Labour Club secretary .

Public Libraries: None. The Clare C. Council Library Ennis, lends books. No public library in village.

Social Clubs: The Labour Club is the only social club in the village. There are no cultural societies etc.

Important Public Buildings (Give brief notes on architectural features)
Clare Castle R.C. Church is a substantial cruciform, gothic, building, very neat on the inside. Ballyea R.C. Church a neat cruciform gothic church with a good entrance gate, and new cemetary attached.

Schools and Colleges
Clare Castle National School is a large five teacher school. It is neat and well kept. Ballyea N. School is also a substantial structure, and looks tidy. Three teachers employed.

Nearest Ennis - three miles distant.

Fairs and Markets; Half-Holiday
Monthly Fairs and Markets: Fairs 30th May and 11th November - two only.
Weekly Market Day: None
Half-Holiday: Thursday

Camping Sites (At principal holiday resorts)
Location: Free camping around the village Landowner: No landowner will object
Parish Council: Yes Secretary: Mr. Power, Clare Castle.

There is no hotel, or other accommodation at the present moment. Ennis - 3 miles distant - supplies the demand.
