The Vice-Guardians to the Commissioners - October 20, 1848
THE last week has exhibited in fearful colours the progressive
destitution resulting from evictions, voluntary surrender of holdings by tenants on being
discharged from all claims of rents.
THE number of houses thrown down must amount to near 2,000 since November, 1847; and the
number of houseless, landless, naked wretches that must be wholly dependent for every
means of existence on the rates must render it impossible to effect such object by
ordinary means; and before the pressure increases. I deem it my duty to lay the posture of
affairs before the Commissioners.
