Extract from the Vice-Guardians Report - October 31, 1848

"Evictions and levelling houses continue to progress extensively, and it is evident that an enormous and new class of paupers, lately farmers and rate-payers, will be thrown on the rates for support and clothing, to an extent that will, we much apprehend, exceed any in-door accommodation we can possibly provide".
