Peter Murphy

Peter Murphy from Coolsippeen registered at Lack school in 1896. In the early decades of the 20th century, cycle racing enjoyed great popularity throughout the country. Cycle races were common in most towns and villages. Peter Murphy enjoyed considerable success at bicycle races through west Clare, winning races in Kilrush, Kilmihil and Ballynacally. Indeed his winning margin was so great at the Ballynacally race, where he lapped most of the field, that he was heavily handicapped at all future events. Peter also competed successfully at the Kildysart Horse Show for turf cutting. He retained first prize in this category for many years throughout the 1950s.
He was also a skilled fisherman and spent many a wet evening fishing in the local river with considerable success.
