DESERTED AND ORPHAN CHILDREN THERE are at present no deserted children in this parish ; there had been two, who died, supported altogether by collections made at the roman-catholic chapel. Child desertion has certainly decreased within the last 10 years : no case ever occurred of a child dying before discovery. It appeared to witnesses, that the present rate of wages made it quite impossible for a labourer, to make a provision for his children in case of their becoming orphans. The rate of wages given by farmers is 6d. a day to the regularly employed, and 8d. to those who hire occasionally, including diet. The gentlemen usually allow their labourers 8d. a day without diet. |
