North Clare Soldiers in World War I

This list comprises many soldiers from North Clare* who fought in the First World War of  1914-1918.

[*For the purposes of this list, 'North Clare' is broadly defined as comprising the towns and districts of Ennistymon, Lahinch, Liscannor, Miltown Malbay, Inagh, Corofin, Kilfenora, Lisdoonvarna, Doolin and Ballyvaughan.]

Included are soldiers who were killed in action, those who died of wounds, and those who survived the war to die later at home or abroad. Where possible, we have provided details of their regiment, rank and serial number, date of death and burial place, and other local information. Some entries relating to the Crimean War (1854-1856) are also included.

This information was compiled at Ennistymon Library from information researched and provided by Gerard "Guss" O'Halloran of Ennistymon.Mr. O'Halloran is Administrator of The North Clare War Memorial Committee which has erected a plaque at the Old Cemetery, Churchill, Ennistymon to commemorate these men. Mr Tadhg Moloney is responsible for having regimental badges inscribed on the headstones of five men who are buried in the graveyard.

Sources include the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Absent Voters' List, Clare Champion and local interviews.  Additions and corrections would be very much appreciated (please state source), and can be submitted to The Library, Ennistymon, Co. Clare or email mailbox@clarelibrary.ie
