Autumn

by Anthony Edwards

These are days of birds
beaded on high wires
falling from their perches
in breaking waves
strutting through the close-cropped lawn
heads daggers in the earth

These are days of birds
billowing like smoke
through the hedgerow

These are days
when the earth is dug
to catch the spuds before the frost
before the rats take their share
before the birds disappear
and their absence fills the sky

These are days
when sun and moon and birds
float together in the thin cold air
