The Lie of the Land

by Marie Deans

You say it has no make nor shape
Just random stones piled high
With soil and vegetation
Bound into a parcel of land that is yours

I see it as rhythm in landscape
Viewed with an artist’s eye
Free from claim or obligation
This hill is timeless, beyond all laws

Taken from ‘This is Where We Came In’ (1992), page 75.
