There Is Something

by Kate Thompson

There is something in a goatkid’s eye
and in a goatkid’s heart.
Lacking laughter,
he worships in a dervish-dance,
disdaining gravity’s grasp in sweet elation.

There is something in a goatkid’s eye
that I have seen depart
beneath the bite of the butcher’s knife.
I need to know its nature,
and how it can so easily abandon
the little princes of the mountain
to meat and bone.

There is something in my daughter’s eye
and something in her heart.
Lacking grace,
she worships in hilarity and hugs,
and rambles round the roads in silent rapture.

There is something in her constant warmth.
I need to know its nature,
and how to hold it fast
against the randomness of cruelty.

I had a dream.
Beneath the downy hair and milk-pink cheeks,
not a dream,
meat and bone.
