Galwayfilmcentre provides a programme of comprehensive theory and practice-based workshops, designed and developed to meet the needs of new entrants, trainees and professionals in the audio-visual sector.  Our workshops aim to develop the creative potential of participants, as well as providing practical and technical skills.

* Experimental Filmmaking: Film as Art
Saturday 25, Sunday 26 March
What do we mean by experimental/Avant-Garde film?  How does this type of filmmaking relate to theory and the Visual Arts?  A variety of works from the 1920's onwards will be screened and discussed.  This course will also have a practical component

Weekend Workshop on the processes, practices an personnel; trials, tribulations, tasks, tactics, techniques and technologies involved in film and video production - in short, all you need to know if you want to get a short film or documentary written, produced and screened.

Assistant Directing

This workshop will examine the role and responsibilities of the AD within a film crew, from script breakdown and scheduling to set procedures for studio and on location shoots

Writing Movies

This course covers all aspects of the craft of screenwriting, with a specific emphasis on identifying the needs and expectations of the audience.

Screen-Test & Audition Technique
Saturday 8, Sunday 9 April

For actors who wish to develop and improve their performance at auditions, from acquiring a strong presence to adapting to direction.

* Camera and Lighting
2 weekends: 8, 9 & 15, 16 April

A hands-on workshop to develop and improve skills in the areas of camera operation and lighting for film, video and stills photography.  This course will concentrate on the use of film camera.

* Sound recording
Saturday 6, Sunday 7 May

A practical workshop in sound recording for film and video using DAT and Nagra systems.

Directing actors for film & television
Saturday 6 Sunday 7 May

Wish you could draw better performances out of your actors? Wondering how to clearly communicate your vision and incorporate actors' ideas into a scene? This course will give you the skills and confidence you need to successfully work with actors and bring exceptional performances to the screen>

2 weekends: 6, 7 & 13, 14 May

A practical and theoretical introduction to the Avid editing process.
N.B. Course participants must have computer skills.  Numbers are limited to maximise access to editing suites.

Saturday 13, Sunday 14 May
This hands-on workshop will concentrate on the development of digital video camera skills.
Course Fee: £315 waged, £120 unwaged
* Advanced Avid Editing
Saturday 20, Sunday 21 May

Gain an indepth knowledge of the workings of the Avid system, and improve your practical skills
NB: Course participants must have previous experience on Avid
Course Fee: £110 waged, £95 unwaged

Learn the capabilities and techniques of digital video editing on desktop systems, using off-the-shelf image manipulation software.
NB: Course participants must have computer skills.

Schools and community programme 2000

Flying film and Video Squads
For the past 11 years these squads have provided a nationwide service to schools and community groups, social clubs and other groups interested in film and video.   Workshops are tailor made for each group inconsultation with the centre.
School media screenings and lectures
The Film Institute of Ireland in association with the Junior Film Fleadh and galwayfilmcentre  present a special screening of Carol Reid's The Third Man, which is part of the revised Leaving Certificate syllabus.  An introduction with study notes for school groups will accompany the screening on Friday 3rd March, 10.30 am.  For bookings/information contact galwayfilmcentre: 091 770 748
Information Tours
Catering for group needs, galwayfilmcentre provides information tours on the activities and facilities available from the centre, as well as advise on training and education options, production schemes and funding, and equipment.
Portfolio Preparation
An ongoing evening workshop for students interested in studying film or video at a third level college. Teh course will cover main areas for inclusion in a portfolio including script-writing, photo essays, storyboarding and basic video skills, and provides ongoing review of students work.
Summer workshops for young people
Week long practical video making workshops run for 8 - 12 and 12 - 18 year olds.

Continuous Professional Development

Trainee Props and Buyers - in association with Screen Training Ireland
May 2000 - 2 weeks
The course will examine key skills required by props and buyers trainees in pre-production, production and post-production
as well as key related areas on set including; Production Design, Locations, Set Design, Art Department, Costume, Camera, Script Supervisor, Assistant Director, Director.
Participants must hold a Union Cart at trainee props or buyers
level and have a commitment to working within the industry.

Future Fictions - in association with Imaginary Productions UK
May 2000
Future Fictions is a forum set up to exchange ideas and views on how we tell and experience stories, now and into the future.
The forum aims to be a catalyst for the exchange of ideas; a place where cutting-edge entertainment technology meets traditional narrative craft.  Examples of new emerging work in the field of computer games, digital art and interactive storytelling will be showcased in a unique arena where participants can explore, interact and play with these new forms of entertainment and technology.
