Competition Details

ONE ACT PLAY COMPETITION
1. The play shall be One-Act and should not be less than 15 minutes nor more than 45 minutes in duration.
2. It is suggested that entries should not contain a character list of more than six persons and that set requirements should also be kept to a minimum.
3. The Committee will consider the question of staging a rehearsed reading of the winning entry in conjunction with its 2000 festival and any such performances will not result in the payment of royalties to the author.
4. There is no official entry form but each entry must be accompanied by a fee of £3 per entry.

First Prize - £200

SHORT STORY COMPETITION
1. Each entry should be no more  than 3,000 words.
2. There is no official entry form but each entry must be accompanied by a fee of £3   per entry

1. Poems must not exceed 40 lines.
2. There is no official entry form but each entry must be accompanied by an entry fee of £3 or £12 for five entries.

The Judges

Mark O'Sullivan - Short Story Competition
Living in Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Mark O'Sullivan  has had six novels for teenagers published by Wolfhound Press and had works translated into six European languages. He has had short stories published in magazines and journals in Ireland and the U.K. Mark had a drama produced on RTE radio and recently contributed to The Quiet Corner on Lyric FM.   His book Angels
Without Wings won the Reading Association Of Ireland Award in 1999

Brendan Long - One Act Play Competition
Brendan Long is the former editor of The Nationalist Newspaper, Clonmel, and a life member of the National Union of Journalists. Theatre Critic of The Nationalist for many years, he has had a life long involvement in Community Drama, is a former National Chairman of the National League of Ireland and one of the founders of Clonmel Theatre Guild for which he has directed almost 50 productions including a number of Irish premieres. His first full length play, Double Trouble, was produced in 1998 in Clonmel.

Mark Roper - Poetry Competition
Mark Roper's collections include The Hen Ark, published in 1990, by Peterloo/Salmon, which won the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival Prize; Catching the Light, Peterloo / Lagan 1997, and The Home Fire, Abbey Press, 1998. He is an Adult Education Teacher in Waterford and Kilkenny, and was, until recently, editor of Poetry Ireland. He lives in Piltown, Co. Kilkenny.


GENERAL RULES
1.  All manuscripts must be typed on one side of the paper only and must have a title page with the name, address and contact telephone number of the author. Care should be  taken to ensure that the name and address of the author is not typed on the entry.

2. All work submitted must be the original work of the entrant and must not have been performed, published, or accepted for publication on the closing date for entries.

3. The adjudicators' decision on the entries will be final.

4. All entrants agree to allow their submitted work to be published in a collection of the winning entries and in START magazine, South Tipperary's Arts & Cultural Magazine, if selected, and if so decided. Copyright otherwise remains with the author.

5. Entries will only be accepted on the basis of the above mentioned rules and the   specific rules laid out below. Receipt of an entry will be taken by the Committee as evidence that the author is satisfied with and agrees to all of these rules.

7.  All entry fees should be sent with your work and should either be in the form of a crossed cheque, a draft or a postal order made payable to the South Tipperary Writers' Weekend in Irish punts.

8. The closing date for the receipt of all entries is Friday, September 8th, 2000 at 5.30 p.m. No late entries will be accepted.

9. Winners will be notified by mid-October. If a list of winners is required please send   a self stamped addressed envelope (or an international reply coupon) to the competition address. Please note that sterling stamps will not  suffice.

N.B. It should be noted that entries will not be returned and copies should, therefore, be retained before submission.
