£7,500 Prize Fund for RDS Art Student Awards

Entry forms are now available for the RDS Art Students Awards 2000.  These Awards seek to recognise excellence in the work of young and emerging Irish artists and provide them with support to further their artistic development.

The Awards comprise the Taylor Art Prize of £5,500, from a donation by Captain A. Taylor, Dublin and augmented by a contribution made by Margaret B. Hutton, first woman Member on the Council of the RDS.  The Henry Higgins Travelling Scholarship of £1,000 from the bequest of Chief Justice Higgins, High Court, Australia, who was born in Ireland; and the £1,000 printmaking prize awarded by the RDS.

The Awards are open to full-time students of recognised Irish Colleges and Departments of Art offering full-time courses.  With the exception of the RDS Printmaking prize which is open to all age groups, candidates must be under the age of 25 years by July 2000 and have attended their college for at least 12 months, having been born in Ireland, or whose parent(s) were born in Ireland.

The RDS Student Art Awards have provided a vital means of enriching Irish art by facilitating contact with the best of art practice abroad.  They have also provided a stimulus, encouraging excellence in stude3nt work in art schools nationally.   Previous winners include Walter Osborne, William Orpen, Harry Clarke, Melanie & Louis Le Brocquy, Arthur Gibney, Dorothy Cross and James Hanley.

All entries should be delivered to the RDS (Anglesea Road Entrance) on Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th July between 10.11am & 12.45pm or 2.00pm & 4.30pm.
