Admission is free but there will be a collection for "Hopes and Homes " a new
Romanian charity which aims to get children out of orphanages and into secure loving home
environments so you are asked to give generously!
News Release for Summer School
Novelists Niall Williams, John MacKenna, David Rice, Joe Haldeman and Rick Wilber, along with poet Paula Meehan, Salmon Publishing's Director Jessie Lendennie and Dublin City University's Roddy Flynn will lecture and lead workshops in writing fiction, non-fiction and poetry at the 2000 edition of Scriobhaimis the University of South Florida/University of Limerick Irish Summer School in Contemporary Writing. Niall Williams, author of "Four Letters of Love" and the recent "As It Is In Heaven," will open the week-long writer's school on Monday, July 24 and then lead a workshop that afternoon.
On Tuesday night, readings by MacKenna, Lendennie, Haldeman, Rice and Wilber will cap a full day of workshops. The readings are open to the public and will take place in UL's beautiful and historic Plassey House. John MacKenna, the author of "Clare," "The Last Fine Summer," and the recent "A Haunted Heart," will lead a workshop on "Historical Fact Into Fiction" on Tuesday morning. Haldeman, the award-winning author of such highly praised science-fiction novels as "Forever War," "The Hemingway Hoax," "1968" and the recent "Forever Free, is also a multiple award-winner for his short fiction, and will lead workshops in book publication and writing short fiction on Thursday.
Jessie Lendennie will lead a workshop on "Writing Poetry and Getting it Published" on Tuesday, and Flynn will lecture the American students on Irish media systems on Tuesday, as well. Paula Meehan will facilitate a workshop and critique prepared work with students . David Rice, the author of last summer's successful "Song of Tiananmen Square," will lecture on "Writing to Get Published" on Thursday and offer another workshop in writing techniques on Friday. Wilber, co-director of the summer school with the University of Limerick's Patricia-Anne Moore, and the author of last year's "Where Garagiola Waits," and the forthcoming "Bone Cold," along with several college textbooks on writing, will lecture on magazine feature writing on Friday.
The Summer School, in its third year, will close on Friday with a gala of writing from
