Aging theatre professional, Mario, stinging from a failed marriage, falls for the vibrant young Elena, making her the star of his new production, a film on tango. Complicating the relationship are Mario's ex-wife, who wants to remain the star, and Elena's mobster boyfriend who is financing the project. The story is narrated through dance sequences that weave fantasy and reality into one seamless tale.
Carlos Saura, Spain February 10
Run Lola Run
A breathless race against the clock in which Lola has 20 minutes to save her lover from certain death. One of the film's strengths lies in the rare pleasure of a female protagonist who is determined and in control from the outset, the survival of her less resourceful lover resting squarely on her shoulders. Literally sprinting through the film, Lola is heroic, fierce, frightened and vulnerable all at once.
Tom Tykver, Germany February 17
Set over the course of one evening in a country hotel, Festen observes preparations for the 60th birthday party of the hotel's owner, Heige. The arrival of his children soon reveals that this is no happy family reunion. The suicide a few months earlier of Heige's other daughter hangs over proceedings and tensions explode when Christian, his eldest son, makes a horrific accusation against his father which chills the air. What follows is a scabrous comedy of revelation and denial.
